Thursday we met at our state representatives office for a tour of the Capitol building. Mark Takano was in California, but his assistants were great and took good care of us.
Marissa took us to the underground tunnel that leads to the capital building. They had a huge model of the Capitol Building. She told us that as big as it seams, that there is actually two thirds more of the building underground. Crazy!
There was all kind of neat historical artifacts to see in the capitol. We found the table that Abraham Lincoln used to give his 2nd inaugural address from.
After checking out the displays, we started our tour.
The rotunda was under construction, but still pretty impressive. Everything in there is symbolic.
In the capital they have a statue representing each state. The boys were happy to find Brigham Young representing Utah.
And it was awesome to see that Ronald Reagan was representing California. We were told that there was a piece of the Berlin wall put in the pedestal. So cool.
After we finished up our tour of the Capitol Building, we went to the Library of Congress.
It was so beautiful! The detail in that building was incredible.
As we were leaving the Library of Congress Ethan turned to me and said, "You know what stinks? When you stop looking at something you'll never see it again...unless I bring my kids, and I probably will." I'm so glad that he understood the significance of this trip.
We weren't allowed to take any food in the capitol, so we went back to our representatives office to pick up our backpacks they held there for us. They let the boys check out Mark Takano's office and even let them sit at his desk.
We then took our lunch break out on the grass. Not a bad setting for a picnic.
Next, we got a tour of the Supreme Court building. We got to go in the courtroom and learn all about the process.
After our tour we went and got dinner, and then went to the D.C. temple.
We hung out in the visitor's center until it closed and then walked around the temple grounds. Once up close we saw the beautiful stained glass on the corners of the building. I have never seen anything like that on a temple. It was so pretty.
After we left the temple we went back for a late viewing of the White house. It was after 10pm by the time we got there. It was neat to see it lit up, and a great way to end the day.
